Texas Bowl Odds & Preview - LSU Has QB Quandary Against Kansas State

Texas Bowl Odds & Preview

College football coaches are often pretty coy about naming their starting quarterbacks, especially when there are legitimate questions about it. And yes, we realize that BetAnySports customers find that relatively annoying. In the case of the Texas Bowl, which will be played on Tuesday night in Houston, there was no way around it.

To a certain extent, you can say that about the Kansas State Wildcats and coach Chris Klieman, because he wasn't certain as to whether Skylar Thompson's lower-leg injury would allow him to play. But as workouts continued, those concerns lessened.

As for Brad Davis, there has been a major headache. And according to iGaming Platform Software, it continues.

You may be asking - who is Brad Davis? Well, he is the interim coach for the LSU Tigers for purposes of this bowl game. After Ed Orgeron was told he wasn't going to continue beyond the end of the season, which happened several games ago, the head coaching search began.

Well, the Tigers made their choice, and it came with a lot of fanfare. It is safe to say that there is a lot of excitement around Baton Rouge with the arrivel of Brian Kelly, who skipped out on Notre Dame in response to a lot of money.

Davis was Orgeron's offensive line coach. And he will be on staff for Kelly as well.So in a sense, he is the perfect guy for this one-off job.

But believe us when we tell you - this is the only thing that is perfect about this bowl undertaking for LSU.

Lord only knows how much influence Kelly has had on how the Bayou Bengals prepared for this Texas Bowl. It's probably better that he didn't have a "cat's paw' on Davis. But it doesn't necessarily mean all that much because the team is desperate for a quarterback.

It is quite possible that if LSU was 100% accounted for, they would be a clear favorite. But there are some glaring holes.

One of them is behind center.

Max Johnson was the starter during the regular season, and you can't discount what this guy has done, as he threw for over 2800 yards with 60% accuracy and 27 touchdowns, with only six interceptions. But he has entered the transfer portal.

It is a huge drop to what they are being presented with. Myles Brennan went into the portal and then came back out, but he's not playing. The intention was to use Garrett Nussmaier, a freshman who was the only QB other than Johnson to throw any passes this season.

But Nussmaier was going to burn his redshirt, and didn't want to. He appealed to the NCAA to allow him to play (he had exhausted the limit of four games already), but ultimately that case was turned down.

So you're going to see walk-on Matt O'Dowd and Tavion Faulk (son of assistant coach Kevin Faulk, the former LSU and New England Patriot running back).

LSU also has at least four future NFL players on defense who won't be in the lineup. That includes LB Damone Clark, a Butkus Award finalist, as well as Derek Stingley,Jr., their top corner. Eli Ricks, one of the nation's top safeties, is transferring to Alabama.

K-State doesn't have any opt-outs to worry about. And in stark contrast to LSU's lack of experience at quarterback, the Wildcats have a sixth-year senior in Thompson, who averaged nine yards an attempt and was intercepted only four times. They will get the ball in the hands of Deuce Vaughn, who averaged 5.9 yards per carry and scored 18 touchdowns.

We expect that LSU will emphasize the ground game out of necessity, but KSU allowed just 3.6 yards a carry. Can they throw the ball enough to create balance?

The Wildcats would seem to be able to. We are mindful that the Tigers have a lot of top-notch recruits, so they won't be tripping over themselves. As a result, this is not a heavy recommendation on K-State. We do like the under, however.
